1916 Mass of Commemoration
The “courage and conviction” of those who gave their lives for Irish freedom was recalled at a Mass of Commemoration to mark the actual centenary of the Easter Rising.
Prayers were offered for the repose of the souls of all who died “in whatever circumstances and on whichever side".
Relatives of those who were a part of the Rising from Mullingar and Westmeath were present and took part in the Mass.
The Commemoration Mass included a large troupe of Westmeath scouts, representatives of veterans organisations, the Gardai, Defence Forces, Mullingar Town Band, Cathedral Choir and Choristers, as well as history students from St Finian’s College, pupils from Gaelscoil an Mhuilinn, and some students from Loreto College.
At the end of Mass, Cllr Paul Daly, Cathaoirleach of Westmeath County Council, laid a wreath in the Cathedral in memory of those who died in the Rising.
