Parishioners meet Cardinal Turkson

Two Mullingar catechists – Helen Kiernan and Antoinette Shaw – met the Vatican’s Cardinal with responsibility for justice and peace issues in Maynooth College on Thursday 5 March 2015.

Cardinal Peter Turkson is the leading African Cardinal in the Vatican.  The Cardinal indicated that Pope Francis will publish an encyclical letter this year, calling on all people to care for the environment, saying “Pope Francis believes that concern for the poor is closely linked to being responsible for all of God’s creation”.

After the lecture, the Mullingar parishioners spoke to Cardinal Turkson and Archbishop Diarmuid Martin about their work in the parish, educating children during the season of Lent about the good work of Trocaire on behalf of the Irish Church in caring for the poor throughout the world. Both the Cardinal and the Archbishop of Dublin thanked them for their work.
